Luna was saved from a high kill shelter in Texas, where dogs generally have just 3 days to be saved before they are killed for space. Luna is spayed, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, heartworm tested negative and micro-chipped. She has an estimated date of birth of 22 February 2016 and weighs around 50 pounds. She has been listed as a Dutch Shepherd mix. We have no way of knowing the exact breed, so it is up to individuals to decide what breed they think she most likely is. We do not have cats at the rescue so no way of knowing how she would act around cats.
LUNA has been here at the rescue now for over a year. Sadly a few months ago another dog got our of her kennel and attacked Luna and she had to have one of her eye's removed and is partially blind in her other eye. She gets around fine and is still a very happy-go-lucky girl.
She is still good with other dogs, but due to her sight I have had to now contain her in a kennel as being around a lot of dogs will cause her stress and anxiety as she can't see them all as she could when she had her full sight.
LUNA would do great with a family either as the only dog or with another dog for company, she does like to be alpha girl so a more submissive dog would be good. She has never been aggressive in any way. She is great with puppies and loves to be loved and to equally give her love back.
LUNA is still young and so taking into consideration and going slowly she would still benefit from an active life. She rides great in the car and is very responsive and would be very easy and fun to train. She walks great on the leash, although now, going to new places she will need to be able to take her time a little more. As you can see with the video's and pictures, she has a lot of fun with other dogs and lives with them in harmony she would just not do well in a home with a strong alpha dog.
Luna is extremely affectionate and is great with all people, at vet visits everyone loved her, a friend brings her 10 year old granddaughter and she loves to play with her. We do not have cats at the rescue so cannot comment how she would be with or around them. She would make a great family dog, or companion to someone who wants that special buddy to take everywhere with them.
She will need a family that understands the importance of training and we encourage all families to work on basic and advanced training as a family so that boundaries and expectations can be set and both Luna and her humans can learn each others body language and personalities and form a stronger bond and understanding of each other.
Luna is available for adoption from Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for a reduced adoption fee of $200
This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.
