ASTRO was saved from a high kill shelter in Texas, where dogs generally have just 3 days to be saved before they are killed for space. ASTRO is neutered, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, heartworm tested negative and micro-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of 14 February 2016 and weighs around 40.00 pound. He has been listed as a German Shepherd Dog Mix. We have no way of knowing the exact breed, so it is up to individuals to decide what breed they think is most likely.
ASTRO with a foster family in Texas until transport to the rescue in Sebec, Maine on 22nd February 2018. This is what his foster family said about him.
Astro is energetic. He is playful with with people and other dogs. He is curious. He knows a few commands.
When Astro arrived at the rescue we accommodated him with his foster buddy Drax and they have been having a great time playing, wrestling and playing with their neighbours through the chain link fence in the outside runs. Astro is a smart boy and is getting very bored here at the rescue and he and Drax are starting to chew, which is only to be expected when they are not getting enough mental stimulation and physical exercise.
Astro is great with other dogs and can be a little alpha with more submissive dogs, but has never shown any kind of aggression whilst here or with his foster family in Texas. He rides great in the car, walks nice on the leash, is very well mannered, although typical with rescue dogs he does jump up to get attention. He would be very easy and fun to train and I believe would excel in not only basic and advanced obedience, but any challenge he is given.
Astro would love an active family that will take him on road trips and adventures to new places, letting him see and smell the sights and sounds the world has to offer. A family that understands that since he is a smart boy he is going to need to be mentally challenged and kept busy. He is great with people and other than jumping a little, has been gentle with children. We do not have cats at the rescue so cannot comment how he would act or respond when seeing them.
We do not recommend dog parks for several weeks, if not months, it is so very important for families and dogs to form a strong bond and get to know each other before exposing them to the potential dangers of dog parks. Although all GaDaH dogs are very well socialized with other dogs, lots of other dogs have not had the benefit of this socialization and do not always know how to play and act with other dogs. You also do not know the control the other families have over their dogs and you should always have a good recall for your adopted dog before going to dog parks.
ASTRO is available for adoption from Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $550.
This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.
