ANNELAISE was saved from San Antonio Animal Care Services.
She had initially been given an age of 11 years old on intake, however, when the vet assessed her this was changed to approximately 6 years old. ANNELAISE was taken from the shelter directly to Deason Animal Hospital where she was given an examination, medicated bath and treatment. She stayed at the vets a few days so that they could monitor her progress.
ANNELAISE initial exam showed (quoted from patient chart) The hind limbs were edematous and all limbs were erythematous and alopecic. The pt had a lateral firm welling of the right stifle and walked peg legged. Most likely a fracture that healed mal-unioned. Pt also had alopecia along her abdomen and trunk and some around her face. Previously diagnosed as demodex. All lymph nodes were large and palpable. After speaking with Jenny it was decided to perform another skin scrape. Skin scrape showed no demodex or other external parasites. Gave pt Bravecto and will give a medicated bath. Also RX'd cephaliexin for skin issues.
Email from the vet with an update (the shelter had named her SMURFETT, which was changed to ANNELAISE):
The skin scrape was negative for demodex as well as sarcoptes, but had lots of bacteria and yeast buds microscopically. Smurfett will get her medicated bath today and she was started on cephalexin last night. She did receive the Bravecto as well for flea prevention. Any other questions or concerns please give me a call.

ANNELAISE upon discharge from the vets went to a wonderful foster home near San Antonio, Texas, her foster mum a former vet tech and currently a nurse. She will be staying there until we find her a wonderful perfect forever family. This is an update from her foster mum:
ANNELAISE is a super sweet girl who was guessed to be about 6 years old, but she acts like a much younger pup. She has a calm, gentle demeanor and rarely barks (unless she is playing with her foster friends).
ANNELAISE seems to be completely house-trained and will let you know if she needs to go outside. She is a ravenous eater and LOVES treats, and she doesn’t seem to have any food aggression, as we can pet and scratch her while eating and her tail just wags.
As you can see in the video, she does have a limp because her right hind leg does not bend at all. She does not let this slow her down at all- she can run as fast as the others across the yard! I have not seen her attempt to jump or put her front legs up on anything yet, and I’m sure her back leg hinders her from doing so. There isn’t any place on her that she doesn’t like scratched, though, so she doesn’t seem to be in pain anywhere.
As for her skin, she has completed her antibiotics, and although some places on her (her feet and neck area, especially) look raw, there is no crustiness or open sore places anywhere on her, so she seems to be on the road to healing. She just needs to grow some hair back- and it looks like this is already happening in most places. She will be going back to the vets for a re-check soon.
We have her on a high-quality food along with omega-3 fish oil supplements as well as kelp mixed into her food for additional nutrients. As with our other spoiled dogs, she is getting a little cooked egg, turkey, etc. to try and help put that weight back on.
ANNELAISE is spayed, rabies, core vaccines, HW tested negative, de-wormed and mirco-chipped. She has an estimated date of birth of 5th November 2009 and at the time of rescue weighed 53.90 pounds.
ANNELAISE is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue If you are interested in giving this beautiful girl a loving forever home, then please go to our website and under the Application tab, complete and submit the application.
ANNELAISE as mentioned is located in a foster home in Texas. We do allow out of state adoptions and upon our vets giving her approval to travel and the required health certificate, she will be transported via PETS LLC. The cost of transport from PETS LLC is $175 and this fee is made directly to them.
